The short answer
Installing AC in a Los Gatos home starts with a load calculation, a check of your ducts and electrical panel, and a choice between central AC, a heat pump, or ductless. Since Bay Area furnaces made from 2029 must be zero-NOx, many owners choose a heat pump now. We confirm current incentives before quoting.
Summer heat in Los Gatos can be very different from summer near the Bay. The Santa Clara Valley has a Mediterranean climate with dry summers and mild, damp winters, and the southern and inland parts of the valley run noticeably hotter on summer afternoons. If you are adding air conditioning to a home that never had it, or replacing a system that no longer keeps up, SwiftAir Conditioning Repair installs AC in Los Gatos homes in ZIP codes 95030 and 95032. We are based in San Jose, about 11 miles north. This page explains how we approach installation in Los Gatos homes, what choices you will face, and how current Bay Area rules affect those choices.
Sizing a System for Los Gatos Summers
A bigger air conditioner is not automatically better. An oversized unit cools the air quickly, shuts off, and starts again. That short cycling wears parts faster and leaves rooms feeling clammy. An undersized unit runs nonstop on the hottest afternoons and still falls behind.
Before we recommend equipment, we do a load calculation for your house. We look at square footage, ceiling heights, insulation, window size and direction, shading, and how many people live there. A west-facing room with large windows needs more cooling than a shaded bedroom on the north side. Many homes also have one room or upstairs floor that is always warmer than the rest of the house, so we plan airflow with that room in mind.
Choosing the Right Type of System
Most Los Gatos homes are a good fit for one of three approaches. We explain the tradeoffs and let you decide.
- Central air conditioner: works with an existing furnace and ductwork. A good choice if your furnace is fairly new and your ducts are in good shape.
- Heat pump: cools in summer and heats in winter with one outdoor unit. Mild, damp winters suit heat pumps well, and they remove the need for a gas furnace later.
- Ductless mini-split: an outdoor unit connected to wall or ceiling units in individual rooms. Useful for homes without ducts, additions, converted garages, or a single hot room.
What We Check Before Installing
Older homes and remodeled homes often have surprises behind the walls. A careful look at the house before installation prevents problems after it. We check:
- Ductwork for leaks, crushed runs, and sizing that matches the new system's airflow
- Your electrical panel to confirm it has room for the new equipment
- A level, accessible spot for the outdoor unit with clearance for airflow and service
- Refrigerant line and condensate drain routes
- Thermostat placement and wiring
Bay Area Rules and Incentives That Affect Your Choice
Under Bay Area Air District Rule 9-4, natural gas furnaces manufactured from 2029 must meet a zero-NOx emission standard. In practice, that points homeowners toward heat pumps when a furnace is replaced after that date. If your furnace is aging, it can make sense to install a heat pump now instead of adding central AC to a furnace you will soon replace.
These rules do not require you to replace working equipment. They apply only when an existing furnace or water heater fails or is replaced. If your furnace works well, adding central AC is still a reasonable option.
The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C) covered qualifying heat pumps placed in service before December 31, 2025. It is not available for new installations after that date. Bay Area homeowners can check BayREN and their local clean energy provider for current heat pump and electrification incentives. Amounts and availability change by funding cycle, so we confirm the current offer before including it in a quote.
How an Installation Day Works
We go over the plan with you before work starts: where the equipment goes, how lines will be routed, and what areas of the house we need to reach. We protect floors and work areas, set the outdoor unit, connect the indoor equipment, and charge and test the system. Before we leave, we show you how the thermostat works, where the filter is, and how often to change it.
We also install AC in nearby Monte Sereno, Campbell, Saratoga, Cupertino, and Santa Clara.
